Visa Foundation Commits $210 Million to Support Small and Micro Businesses and Immediate COVID-19 Emergency Relief

The Visa Foundation today announced a commitment of two programs totaling $210 million to support small and micro businesses, aligning with the Foundation’s long-term focus on women’s economic advancement and inclusive economic development, and to address an urgent need from local communities following the spread of COVID-19.

The first program of $10 million is designated for immediate emergency relief to support charitable organizations on the frontlines responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as public health and food relief, in each of the five geographic regions in which Visa operates: North America; Latin America and the Caribbean; Europe; Asia Pacific; and Central Europe, Middle East and Africa.

“As COVID-19 continues to unfold, communities are feeling the effects and need our immediate support,” said Al Kelly, CEO and chairman of Visa. “As a global company that operates a very local business, we recognize this need. We’re also committed to the long-term recovery and will continue to explore ways we can accelerate economic activity in line with our mission to help individuals, businesses and economies thrive.”

The second program is a five-year, strategic $200 million commitment to support small and micro businesses around the world, with a focus on fostering women’s economic advancement. This action expands the Visa Foundation’s long-standing support for small and micro businesses globally. The funds from the Visa Foundation will provide capital to non-government organizations (NGOs) and investment partners supporting small and micro businesses.

Small and micro businesses are the backbone of the global economy, accounting for more than 90 percent of worldwide businesses and contributing 50 to 60 percent of global employment.i There is a $300 billion annual credit deficit in funding for women-owned small and micro businesses, which is expected to grow given the recent economic turmoil unfolding due to COVID-19.ii

“Now more than ever, we must accelerate our support for small businesses on the frontlines driving economic growth,” said Kelly. “As many small and micro business owners are women, there will be a ripple effect supporting women’s economic advancement, which we believe is one of the most important ways to achieve gender equality, reduce poverty and foster inclusive economic development.”

Through the $200 million small and micro business program, the Visa Foundation will provide $60 million in grants to NGOs dedicated to supporting small and micro business owners, many of whom are women, in every region where Visa operates. The Visa Foundation will also allocate $140 million with investment partners that generate positive social and financial returns for small and micro businesses.

“Two hundred million dollars in new financial resources demonstrates our continuing commitment to support small and micro businesses, with a focus on women’s economic advancement globally,” said Graham Macmillan, President of the Visa Foundation. “When women thrive, communities thrive. We know this matters now more than ever as the global economy seeks to recover and rebuild.”

Hair Care for Healthcare: How the Coronavirus Impacts Your Hair Cleansing Routine

“Wait, do I have to start washing my hair more now?”

If you’ve asked yourself that question during a recent 20-second hand-scrubbing stint at your sink, you’re not alone.

Personal hygiene is one of our clearest bets for beating the coronavirus, which is leading many to wonder if the same hardcore washing routine implored for our hands needs apply to our hair.

Here’s what we know right now about your hair’s potential involvement in the spread of COVID-19, along with some tips for how you can take extra care of your hair (and ultimately, yourself) during these challenging times.

Can the Coronavirus Live on My Hair?

The short answer is yes. Or at the very least, probably.

Scientists’ understanding of COVID-19 is evolving in real-time, so there isn’t a definitive ruling on how long the virus could stay locked onto your locks or how common hair has been as a mechanism for its moving from one person to another.

The CDC suggests the virus could stay viable for hours or days, depending on the type of surface. But because hair is more porous, the coronavirus shouldn’t be able to survive as long as it could on something smoother, like stainless steel. And because we don’t reach out and touch things with our hair quite as much as we do with our hands, it’s a significantly lower threat for coming in direct contact with the virus to begin with.

Still, hair is a surface of some sort. And thanks to the “don’t touch your face” direction, we’re all pretty aware of how easy it is for us to make incidental contact with our head and hair.

Doctor Recommended: Daily Shampooing to Defend Against Coronavirus

That’s why several doctors recently recommended to Today that washing your hair belongs on the list of best practices for beating COVID-19.

“Using shampoo, there are surfactants — charged molecules that will bind to dirt, to oil, to bacteria, to viruses — and get them off or kill them,” explained Dr. Adam Friedman, the interim chair of dermatology at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“Washing hair will prevent whatever matter is on your hair from being maintained.”

Tips for Taking Care of Your Hair During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Wait a minute – daily cleansing?

If reading that made you shed a tear somewhere inside for fear that shampooing every day will wash away all the hard work you’ve put into your hair so far, we understand.

Typically, most hair care experts recommend that you only wash your hair only a few times per week to retain the scalp’s natural oils and avoid the risk of drying it out.

But these aren’t typical times.

Fortunately, there are still ways to keep your hair in good condition while keeping it corona-free.

Here are a couple quick tips to promote healthy hair growth that will leave hair soft, silky, and full of gorgeous shine, even during this time of duress.

  • DON’T: Wash your hair in scalding hot water.

This will result in dehydrated hair and increase frizz and static. It’s alright to begin by rinsing with warm water, which will open your hair’s cuticles and allow products to sink in and do their job. But before you rinse them out, you want to switch to colder water to seal those cuticles back up with all the benefits your products provide locked inside.

  • DO: Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner

You want to keep your hair hydrated and moisturized (yes, those are two different things) during this time of duress.

Pai-Shau’s Replenishing Hair Cleanser
and will not strip your hair of natural oils. Unlike other heavily-based oily products that have large molecules too big to penetrate deep inside the hair, Pai-Shau ‘s Signature Tea Complex uses smaller molecules in its formula, so it’s able to provide deep cleansing power without disrupting any of your scalp’s natural oil production.

  • DON’T: Lather in the shampoo on the ends of your hair.

This will only further dry out the ends. Instead, experts recommend starting your lather at the nape of your neck and working your way up to your hairline. To really get the most out of your cleanse, section your hair into parts and spend a few minutes scrubbing each section of your scalp.

If you’re stepping up your shampooing frequency to be extra safe during the coronavirus pandemic, you might want to add in an additional product to help maintain moisture levels.

Using Pai-Shau Biphasic Infusion – a daily, oil-free rejuvenating concentrate with a potent amount of our Signature Tea Complex – will nourish the hair structure, attract moisture, and lock it inside.

It also surrounds hair with a sheer veil of shielding properties to protect against environmental factors, which will prevent your hair from drying out.

DON’T: Brush your hair immediately after the shower.

When you get out of the shower, your hair is extremely fragile and prone to breakage. The chances of doing more harm than good by brushing immediately will increase along with the number of times you’re cleansing each week. Instead, use a product like Pai-Shau’s Replenishing Cream Conditioner, which detangles hair and adds shine without adding weight, after you cleanse. Following a brief towel dry, spray Pai-Shau’s Something To BeLeave-In all over. The “multeatasking” product is not only a leave-in conditioner, but also adds shine and protects against environmental pollution.

Tea-Based Products Can Be Your Hair’s Best Friend During Coronavirus

From healing to cleansing to beautification, the power of tea has been known since antiquity. Today, steeped tea leaves are second only to water as the world’s most consumed beverage.

Naturally occurring vitamins and antioxidants make tea leaves the perfect ingredient for beauty rituals, providing powerful purification and rejuvenation for hair, skin and scalp, courtesy of Mother Nature.
That’s why at Pai-Shau, Signature Tea Complex is in every single product to give you intense moisture, lasting protection and beautiful hair. All Pai-Shau products are cruelty free, vegan, color safe, keratin safe, gluten free, paraben free, sulfate free and phosphate free. Even the packaging is BPA free!

Just from my conversations with a few of them, it’s clear the importance of supporting C-CAP’s work, as they empower future generations with opportunity.

My collection is designed to provoke our desire to always search for more,” said Goodluck.

Noon By Noor reveals its Fall 2020 Runway Collection

For its 16th return to New York Fashion Week, Noon By Noor reveals its Fall 2020 Runway Collection on Tuesday, February 11th at Spring Studios, Gallery II.

Sitting front row was Bel Powley, wearing Noon By Noor’s Palmdale trouser and Westport top, alongside Jamie Chung in Noon By Noor’s Emerald Green Palmdale trouser and Harrison Shirt.

For Noon By Noor’s Fall 2020 Runway Collection, designers Noor Rashid Al Khalifa and Haya Mohammed Al Khalifa took inspiration from Bahrain’s traditional handcrafted doors and decorative architecture.

Intricate geometric shapes, which are carved in a shallow relief on wooden structures, doorways and buildings, are celebrated in this season’s fabrics. A scroll jacquard showcases fluid shapes from architectural details. Geometric lace in both black and white is more graphic in design, mimicking interlacing fretwork.

A bold scarf-tailoring fabric with a raw fringed edge in black and white provides a strong contrast to softer tones. Tweed, lined in golden oak, modernizes the traditional fabric. Satin in pure ivory is refined and alluring. Natural textiles in a utility blend linen-wool mix as well as cropped waffle knitwear, contrast the softer silks, chiffon and organza.

“We explored Bahrain’s architectural beauty through fabric and exquisite tailoring, sharp lines and earthly hues. It’s a collection both polished as a pencil skirt or wool trouser, but also leisurely and graceful,” said Noor Al Khalifa. “Softer, feminine elements such as lace and embroidery are incorporated as details to more masculine shapes, attesting to the brand’s aesthetic,” said Haya Al Khalifa.

Fall’s colors are inspired by the golden hour of sunlight at dusk. Muted tones and monochrome shades are drawn from sandstone and darker woodwork tones. Golden Oak, Rose Smoke, Ivory, White, Peat and Black create the seasonal palette.

Architectural angles and shapes inspire silhouettes and construction details of garments – narrow vertical slits, square necklines, released pleats and pin tucks. Shapes are both neat and minimalist as well as fluid and romantic.

Noon by Noor’s Fall 2020 collection allows women to wear the beauty found in Bahraini architecture in a minimal yet expressive way.

The alice + olivia fall/winter 2020 collection is inspired by the globetrotter: beautiful prints, fabric and artwork from across the world create an individualized concept of modern renaissance. alice + olivia designer Stacey Bendet took cues from her own artistic process renovating an apartment in the Dakota, perhaps New York City’s most iconic landmark residence. Choosing with care the modern pieces and eclectic patterns that would fill her home and bring light to the building’s grand gothic architecture took her imagination and eye on a nomadic worldwide journey. This season brings her apartment to life in clothes that evoke rich graphic tapestries, vintage French fabrics and even the deep ebony accents in the designer’s home. And like the apartment, the collection comes together with modern flair, ready to live in and inspire.

Fall/winter 2020 is modern bohemian grounded in strong materials and palettes. Its eclectic beauty is showcased in a sequence of gorgeously furnished vignettes. The sets begin with a magical dark forest, and travel through far-flung locations like an old-world Orient Express train and a chateau filled with vintage trunks, rugs and wonders.

The collection itself brings a modern twist to color blocking, with autumn gold, ruby red, and bright teal mini and maxi dresses styled with black sculptural faux-leather and croc (made into chic puffers, trenches, and dresses) and luxurious faux-fur. This back-to-black color blocking is complemented by old master paintings featured in prints and on t-shirts and sweatshirts, accented with pearl hardware details. Statement knits are featured as full looks, swathed and styled to create effortless autumn drama.

The beautiful engineered prints in the collection mix interior materials from all over the world, creating tapestry-like patterns that tell a completely new story. Intricate embroidery, billowy sleeves, high-cut necks and tops with delicate smocking give the collection its old-world attention to craft, while cropped silhouettes, and fun faux-croc make the clothes entirely modern.

Renaissance gets tough with camo print motifs on pretty dresses and puffer coats. The graphics are bold and strong and work in chorus with the collection’s rich textures: beautiful brocades, bohemian burnout silks and colorful paisleys.

Bendet says, “What’s old is right again: we ought to take time to appreciate the beauty of what’s here, and make it new.” This season, alice + olivia collaborated with Zero Waste Daniel, a New York based young designer and non-waste pioneer. At the conclusion of the design process for alice + olivia’s Fall/Winter 2020, Zero Waste Daniel applied excess fabric to breathe new life into preexisting styles like the alice+ olivia amazing high-rise boyfriend jean that features an appliqued multicolor metallic jacquard peacock motif which is paired with a bordeaux flat sequined blouson sleeve top and hand embroidered, embellished mix media denim jacket. Zero Waste Daniel says, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to show how zero waste fashion can be applied to so many styles and have the chance to flex my design skills with such a fun and colorful customer in mind. alice + olivia is the perfect partner because in order to make sustainability popular you have to also make it fun and A+O is the MOST FUN!”

Fall/Winter 2020 embodies a nomadic spirit and is an ode to vintage eclecticism for the globe trotter with a present-day wanderlust heart that is inspired by both the beauty of the past and the possibilities of the future.

Luxe Hotels’ first branded property in New York City — opened on Tuesday, Feb. 4, in Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood. It is a 98-room boutique hotel housed in the former headquarters of LIFE Magazine. From its prohibition era bar to art collection from local artists, the hotel pays homage to the talented artists, writers, and creative staff who lived and worked in the building. The hotel’s impeccably appointed, pet-friendly guest rooms and suites provide a seamless blend of modern conveniences and historic charm. The property also features a signature destination restaurant, The Marilyn.

“We are elated to bring Luxe Hotels’ casual luxury to guests in New York,” said Luxe Hotels Chairman and CEO Efrem Harkham. “Travelers will find exceptional service, as well as value and comfort when they stay at Luxe Life, plus the opportunity to stay in a landmark building with an incredible legacy.”

John Ames Mitchell, founder and former editor of the iconic LIFE Magazine, moved his company’s operations to 19 West 31st Street upon the building’s completion in 1895. The magazine’s famed artists, writers and creative staff lived in the apartments above their shared offices — the first “co-working” space of the era — and included Charles DanaGibson, Norman Rockwell, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Margaret Bourke-White, and Robert Capa. Today, the LIFE team’s creative spirit lives on throughout the neighborhood and throughout the hotel.

At the helm of the hotel’s food and beverage offerings are chefs Scott Hawley and Michael Gutowski, two experienced New York City restaurateurs. The hotel’s signature restaurant, The Marilyn — named after Hawley’s grandmother — will be a destination on its own, serving up modern new American cuisine with serious flavor. The restaurant’s warm design will bring guests back to another era with a modern twist. Visitors should expect house-made pastas and market-driven, seasonal plates accompanied by a carefully curated selection of cocktails and wine.

The rumored Prohibition speakeasy bar for LIFE Magazine staffers will be brought back to life in the hotel’s basement. Coming this summer, the speakeasy will set a new standard for NoMad’s nightlife. Applying exceptional cocktail programs from their existing bar and restaurant projects, the space will feature craft cocktails and a selection of fine beer and wine.

Luxe Life New York is a destination hotel for service, history, food, drink and nightlife, and is conveniently located for both leisure and business travelers — just 30 minutes from all major airports in the greater New York area.

This marks exciting growth for the Luxe Hotels brand. Less than a year ago, Rose Garden Palace Hotel in Rome rebranded to Luxe Rose Garden Roma, and is now the first hotel in Europe to carry the Luxe namesake. In addition, the company’s flagship in Beverly Hills, Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel, will complete a $4+ million renovation this spring. The brand’s other hotels include Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel in the chic Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles and Luxe City Center Hotel in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles.

Rates at Luxe Life New York start at $199 per night.

Barcelona-based ready-to-wear label, Custo Barcelona, is pleased to
unveil the latest collection for the Fall / Winter 2020 season.
Looking to the future for inspiration, Creative Director Custo Dalmau has put forth a collection that takes an imaginative journey through time and space, conveying a message of universality and optimism — a vision of peace for all.

The collection debuted on Saturday, February 8th at the striking Angel Orensanz Foundation on the Lower East Side of New York, where the historic building provided the perfect contrasting backdrop for the collection’s futuristic, vibrant color palette that has become signature to the Custo brand. The Fall / Winter 2020 collection is designed around a 24/7 life. Through the use of technological fabrics, it provides both comfort and functionality with pieces inspired by sportwear, which introduce the language of Custo Barcelona to a new generation.

Special attention has been paid to outdoor garments: from anoraks to quilted pieces, these styles offer an oversized fit and their sporty appeal can be seen in details such as pockets, jumbo zip closures, automatically closing buckles and reflective fabric inserts. Emphatically voluminous coats and jackets are intertwined with the body skimming silhouettes of skirts and dresses, which feature asymmetric hems and sensual transparent elements. The technological fabrics take on different meanings within the collection and allow sports-inspired pieces to exist alongside cocktail dresses and evening wear. Iridescent, metallic fabrics bring life to a part of the collection that plays with lamination and sequins to create a wet effect, paying homage to the feverish disco look of the 1980’s.

Beautiful core fabrics blend with technological materials to create new sparkling and metallic fabrics, which stand out in the collection together with lurex, jacquard, sustainable technical leather, viscose cady, satin and georgette. Design details are celebrated in the use of intricate stitching throughout the collection, which is distinguished by the precious Zegna Baruffa cotton threads used. These threads tie together the incrustations and jacquards, as well as lamé details – which serve to add a touch of brightness to key styles throughout the range. Embossing, the founding trademark of the Custo Barcelona look, further expresses the collection’s futuristic inspiration.

Embossed details like the “Avatar mask” display prominently throughout the offering, seen in micro and macro patterns. Embossed accents like the Butterfly Wings stamp stylize the silhouettes of butterfly wings and create an all-over undulating motif. An embossed graphic of Tokyo, a city that whole-heartedly embraces the future, takes inspiration from comic book graphics
to complete the core aesthetic for the women’s and men’s collections this season. The color palette ranges from bright reds to Prussian and electric blues, paired alongside citrus greens and yellows, which are all amplified next to vivid metallics and iridescent tones.

The collection for men follows in the footsteps of the women’s range, utilizing technological materials, double fabrics and quilted pieces to tell the season’s narrative. While the outdoor garments have a baggy proportion, the trousers offer more of a comfort fit with stretch at the ankles. The activewear, exclusive to the collection for men, stands out through details such as rubber zippers and breathable elements incorporated into the styles. Additionally, a Camouflage print is introduced to the men’s offering, which uses intense details in its iconography – from the bold red color to an entrancing deco stamping.

Hakan Akkaya makes a strong statement of feminine strength and cultural melding for Fall/Winter 2020-2021.

As the crowd looked on in amused awe, forty-five models made their way around the lengthy U-shaped runway at Pier 59, Stage C on Saturday, February 8th. It was, in a phrase, “a provocative feast for the fashionable-eyed observer.” The Istanbul based designer, now a fixture on the runways of NYFW, filled the cavernous, raw, black space to the brim with an audience dressed to impress, perfectly complementing the show-stopping looks that walked ON the runway.

Akkaya stated his inspiration as “Amish Meets Punk”. The inspiration was clear throughout the collection from the first look to the last. Akkaya created a collection that reinterprets the iconic clothing of the Amish sect who, to this day, turn their backs to the Modern Age, while merging it with the attitude and detailing of the Punk Subculture. The cameras & phones went a-flutter when the key looks appeared (48 in total!). In his words, Hakan Akkaya says, “t his season, my collection attracts all of the attention of femicide, justice, revolt and equality. Women who rock the runway – Women who rock the world!”

The collection also strongly embraced the most note-worthy trend of recent fashion weeks –  androgyny. Many of Akkaya’s men wore dresses, skirts and tunic blouses while many of his women donned suiting and collared shirts, each referencing the garb traditionally found in the opposite genders’ closets, yet there was something different about the trend in the hands of a designer of Hakan Akkaya’s level of talent… the looks actually seemed like they have a chance of being worn as designed, unlike many others creating in this vein.

Hardware also played a major role in defining the collection with garments pierced in a wide variety of places like caps of shoulder, up and down the legs and princess seams of jackets and dresses, as well as through the fingertips of the black latex gloves that completed nearly every look. The hardware was not strictly ornamental, but rather crossed the line to integrally function as part of the garment itself.

As the finale walk-around commenced, the entire audience shrieked their approval, only to ramp it up even more when designer himself, Hakan Akkaya, appeared, nearly floating with pride as he blew kisses to his legions of fans, new & old alike, all the while wearing a black lace mask, which he tied onto his face during a stop on the runway. The crowd approved and Akkaya soaked up every single crack of applause and adoring shriek in a manner that is becoming his trademark.
