On Bonaire, it’s hard not to be in awe of the water in shades of pale turquoise and deep blue just offshore. The island is filled with desert hills, cactus, and even pink salt flats. Unlike many other Caribbean destinations, the island’s main appeal is in the fact that it’s not overbuilt and overrun with tourists. On Bonaire, luxury is overshadowed by quiet beaches, gentle breezes, clear water and enough space to take it all in.

Conservation is the main theme on the island, with a focus on protecting the waters and the land. The Bonaire National Marine Park protects the island’s coral reefs and surrounding marine life, making the sea central to both daily life and travel here. Divers and snorkelers can reach many sites directly from shore, but so much access comes with great responsibility. Visitors are expected to follow park rules, by wearing coral reef friendly sunscreen such as Sea2Stream, avoid disturbing marine life when in the water, and leave shells, coral, and other natural objects where they belong. Divers aren’t even allowed to wear gloves to help curb the natural desire to reach out and touch corals while exploring the underwater eco-systems.

Lac Bay, on the island’s eastern side, is one of the best places to see that care up close. The calm waters of the bay are filled with mangroves forming narrow green channels through the water. The Mangrove Center leads unhurried tours showcasing the natural beauty of the island while exploring more of the conservation benefits. When out on the water, you paddle past tangled roots, watch small reef fish move beneath the surface, and drift through stretches where the only sounds are water, wind, and birds in the trees.
The same low-key feeling carries into nearly every aspect of life. Relying heavily on the wind and sun to power the whole island is one element of their island-wide sustainability efforts. Another major advancement is the island’s reverse-osmosis desalination process which makes high-quality tap water and eliminates the need to purchase single-use bottles of water.

Meals on Bonaire are shaped by the climate and realities of island life. Traditional Krioyo dishes give visitors a clear sense of local flavor, and much of their diet is based on the local catch of the day. At Posada Para Mira in Rincon, Bonaire’s oldest town, the food is hearty and straightforward: stewed goat, stewed beef, local fresh fish, and even iguana for those willing to try it. Hearty plates come with sides of rice, sweet plantains, pumpkin pancakes, and they all pair perfectly with an ice-cold tamarind juice. It is the kind of restaurant that feels like a local gem, generous without being dressed up.

When it comes to sustainable fun, Bonaire Landsailing Adventures makes use of one of the island’s most reliable natural features: the trade winds to create a fun thrill ride. The carts move across the open landscape without engines, powered by wind alone. It is fast, a little unexpected, and a good reminder that Bonaire’s best and most unique experiences often come from working with the elements, rather than trying to overpower them.
