To kick of Arab Fashion Week, The Arab Fashion Council hosted Fashion Icon Awards in Dubai. Fashion Icon for 2021 is Barbie as the most t diverse fashion doll in the world. Opening ceremony was invite-only, but have no fear; with technology (Insta) at our hands, we could see all the glitz and glamour of the night. Getting a Fashion Icon Award is an incredible honor. The Fashion Icon is voted by a panel of over 500 industry members that vote anonymously through a period of 10 months each year. The winner receives an intricate award consisting of a female figure with wings spread overhead. It is crafted in Lebanon, and it takes over 100 hours of labor.
Lebanese singer, Maya Diab, won the first Fashion Icon Award last year. She handed the 2021 trophy to Kim Culmone who is the Head of Global Design for Barbie. Jeremy Scott, the creative direction of Moschino, showcased a Barbie-inspired collection on this occasion and he received the AFC’s medal of honor.
“a Fashion Icon is a role model that inspires ideology, change and sets trends. Barbie is this icon that has been and still inspires generations of children to embrace the best of over 200 careers. In reference to fashion, Barbie is always a main figure that ignites a sense of creativity and love of fashion from the early journey of a designer’s career. For over 60 years, Barbie has been inspiring designers from around the globe, including inspiring the legacy of creative directors. It is time for Barbie to be named the Fashion Icon in tribute to its lifetime achievement.” said Mohammed Aqra, the Chief Strategy Officer for AFC.
