Have you heard about San Miguel de Allendes famous Cena Negra?

Every year, this Mexican city celebrates the Day of the Dead ( Dia de los Muertos) which is a key cultural celebration for Mexicans. It is a day remembrance and celebration of the lives of their ancestors, departed family members and friends. Mexican families build mini altars adorned with candles, flowers, food, and photographs of their loved ones. Many people wear colorful skeleton costumes, Catrinas, and paint their faces, which has become part of pop culture folklore with elements of the celebration appearing in movies like James Bond and shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race.

For nine years, Hotel Matilda, famous in Mexico for its distinguished architecture, celebrated the Day of the Dead by hosting Cena Negra, a creative culinary extravaganza.  This year, Hotel Matilda and Visit Mexico will celebrates the 10th edition of this unique celebration in New York City!

The event will take place on Thursday, November 4th at 48 Wall Street, in the Grand Banking Hall within this historic building located in FiDi  of Manhattan and will be fully themed for the Day of the Dead.

The 6-course dinner will be designed by chef Gabriela Ruiz, recognized in 2019 as one of the best Chefs in the world by the Mexico Gastronomic Guide. The curated dinner will be paired with wines and spirits from the brands Tequila Casa Dragones, Casa Pedro Domecq, Montelobos, Ancho Reyes. The event will be complemented with an exhibition of art and traditional elements of the celebration such as Catrinas, altars, marigold flowers, sugar skulls as well as traditional Mexican liquors.

The renowned plastic artist Alonso Cartu will create an art installation throughout the venue and table settings.

The Day of the Dead  Traditions range from preparing food and offerings at home to taking them directly to cemeteries. A common theme of the festivities are the varied gastronomy and celebratory atmosphere that will be replicated at the Cena Negra in New York.
