5 Home Remodeling Trends for Timeless Luxury, According to CEO Leena Heiman

POP Style TV reached out to CEO Leena Heiman, who heads MCC Kitchen, Bath & Closet Remodeling, one of the premier luxury remodeling companies in the Midwest, to uncover which trends homeowners should consider investing in. Whether showcasing quiet luxury with cashmere cardigans or flaunting loud luxury with a Ferrari, one thing is sure: the luxury sector is here to stay and is expanding rapidly. In fact, the global luxury goods market is projected to reach $392.40 billion by 2030. Similarly, the luxury home industry is thriving, with remodeling adding billions of dollars to the sector.

Unfortunately, unlike designer clothes or vehicles, which you can easily switch out, home investments are more entrenched, so following trends requires more caution. Do you genuinely love it, or does it reflect the taste of the zeitgeist?

Homeowners are remodeling and renovating their homes more frequently than ever. Outdated trends and styles fuel their motivations. Picking the right vision for your remodel will ensure you don’t outgrow your home.

For the Minneapolis-based construction executive, timeless luxury means focusing on functional design, quality products, and craftsmanship rather than fleeting designs. In the luxury home sector, Heiman emphasizes that creating the “dream kitchen” involves listening to customers’ wants and needs, understanding their goals, sharing with customers about code-related issues that can affect their remodeling, and presenting a clear vision that incorporates the reason why a particular layout has been presented.

“Often, a client will come to me with a specific idea in mind, and it’s my job to share important information that can affect their health and lifestyle,” she says. “For example,  they might not think about a health hazard, like placing a stove on an island when you have young children. Or they could have the wrong power in their vent hood or not have the minimum distance between cabinetry, appliances, and other areas. They might not know the advantages or disadvantages of a particular Quartz countertop. I ensure my clients are fully informed about their choices.”

Heiman was recognized as one of Kitchen & Bath Design News’ 2023 Innovators and was the cover star of Blue Book’s Who’s Who in Construction in 2019. Her company, MCC Kitchen, Bath & Closet Remodeling, won Best of Houzz in 2019, 2023, and 2024.

Leena Heiman exclusively shared with POP Style TV five luxury remodeling trends that will never go out of style.

Open Floor Plans

Any New Yorker knows the sacredness of finding a loft in the city’s competitive apartment market, but Heiman says open floor plans are a beloved design staple across the US. An open floor plan, also called an open concept, gives the illusion of a bigger space. An open floor plan removes walls between the living room, dining room, and kitchen. An open floor plan provides better entertainment options and helps to provide better light.

Leena Heiman says an example would be a layout that integrates the kitchen with a breakfast bar area and a formal dining room, all elegantly finished with a chandelier. She notes that open floor plans are popular because they make a space feel larger and are ideal for hosting gatherings. When considering an open floor plan, she advises taking into account both where socializing will occur and where you value privacy.

High-end Kitchen Cabinetry

One of the most important changes you can make in your home, according to Heiman, is kitchen cabinetry. “Without a doubt, a kitchen remodel done right will increase the value of your home,” she says. “Beyond numbers, families spend most of their time together in the kitchen. So true luxury comes from creating a space that’s not just aesthetically pleasing, but made to last no matter if kids are running around.”

Heiman recently launched Luna Village Cabinetry, a premier kitchen cabinetry line. Only 1,000 Luna Village kitchens will be made, and a percentage of every sale will be donated to UNICEF.

“I’ve had the opportunity to fully customize The Luna Village kitchen to reflect my clients as individuals—whether as people, professionals, or homemakers,” says Heiman. “True luxury isn’t just about design and finishes but also about having cabinetry perfectly tailored to the details of your life, such as having a pull-out cabinetry for your mixer, a wall pullout for your spices, or a tall enough storage cabinet for your crockpot. My aim with every kitchen is to reflect my clients’ lifestyles, habits, and unique tastes.”

Basement Transformations

“Do not ignore the potential of your basement,” Leena Heiman says, describing it as one of the most rewarding and popular remodeling projects in Minneapolis.

Although many people use basements as storage or forget they exist altogether, Heiman says it can be turned into an extra bedroom, an office, a movie theater, or an entertainment area. The options are limitless.

“Of course, sometimes what you really need is storage space,” she says. “But how much storage space do you need? Are you optimizing your storage solutions to ensure the rest of the house is free for living, working, and pleasure? Cabinetry is not just for the kitchen but can be customized for laundry rooms and other storage necessities.”

Spa-Like Bathrooms

Heiman notes that the bathroom is the second most lucrative remodeling endeavor after the kitchen. One timeless luxury trend she recommends is creating a spa-like bathroom with features such as a double showerhead with a central rainshower, a custom bench, a hot tub, a smart toilet, and even integrating the open floor plan concept.

“Some couples don’t realize how crucial a spa-like bathroom is until they experience it,” says Heiman. “I personally love designing a separate area for the toilet so the bathroom remains functional for the other person when it’s in use.”

Outdoor Kitchens

“Here in the Twin Cities, we don’t take our summers for granted,” says Heiman. “So when the warmer months come, we spend most of our time outside with friends and family. For this reason, outdoor kitchens are a rising trend in Minneapolis (they are already popular in places like Los Angeles and Miami), and I think they will only grow in popularity.”

Nothing says summer like barbeques and enjoying the sun, but Heiman says an outdoor kitchen opens the scope to your menu and celebration, especially if you don’t want to run back and forth with the inside kitchen.

“Ultimately, I think timeless luxury remodeling trends keep elegance, function, and health front and center,” says Heiman.
