New York Fashion Week 2021 notably brings excitement to the fashion world and this year was no different. More importantly, it seemed to contrast the current social climate. Designers strayed away from plush joggers and knitted garments. Instead, they brought the fun back into clothing. With many people being limited to their homes, some may have lost some of the joy clothes once brought. But with the 2021 New York Fashion Week wrapped up, it’s evident that the enthusiasm returned. Bright colors, glamour, you name it! Below are some of the best looks and trends this year’s fashion week.
Glitz and Glamour
Old Hollywood was paid homage this season. Glitter adorned high-slit gowns and heels. Badgley Mischka seemed to take classic styles of New Years Eve and added an elegant edge.
Heritage and Tradition
Designers always add a personal touch to their collections. But this NYFW, viewers saw the direct connection to heritage. Studio 189 is largely based in Ghana and featured traditional prints.
Grunge
Although Y2K made a resurgence in media, grunge was reimagined on this year’s runway. Brands like R13 brought modern touches to layered plaid and dark clothing.
Pops of Pink
New York Fashion Week this year seemed to try to lighten the mood. The use of subtle pinks helped brighten the runways.
Clean Fashion
Despite its enjoyable nature, fashion is responsible for major waste production. So to limit their carbon emissions and pollution, brands utilized locally sourced material.
Preppy and Chic
Modern takes on the preppy style was highlighted this year, especially by Alice + Oliva. Several brands utilized plaid, lace, and high neck bows.
Western
Western is on trend, from clothing to nail décor. But brands showcased their versatility. Dur Doux displayed full cow printed looks, while others added subtle touches. These included button-downs and boots.
Creative Cutouts
Skin exposure is expected, such as the standard high leg slit. But cutouts graced models all over. Kim Shui particularly leaned into the design with its NYFW collection.
Splashes of Orange
Orange was throughout the latest fashion week. From jackets to leggings, shades of the warm color was included in numerous styles. Christian Cowan elevated the rend by creating monochromatic looks.
