The annual Tisch Gala brought together an inspiring cross-section of artists, innovators, and industry leaders, highlighting the powerful intersection of storytelling, education, and emerging technology. Hosted by New York University Tisch School of the Arts, the evening celebrated not only artistic excellence but also the forward-thinking vision shaping the next generation of creatives.

Among the night’s most celebrated honorees was Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, whose impact as both an artist and educator continues to resonate deeply. Reflecting on her recognition, Parks shared, “I’ve been teaching at Tisch since around 2008 or 2009, and what’s great is that everything I learn by making my own work, I bring into the classroom.” Drawing from collaborations with icons like Spike Lee, Oprah Winfrey, and Ron Howard, Parks emphasized the importance of real-world experience in artistic education.

Her advice to aspiring creatives was refreshingly practical: embrace consistency over perfection. “If you can’t spend two hours writing or practicing, do a ‘scooch’- 20 or 30 minutes,” she explained. “You’d be surprised how that accumulates, like compounded interest.” Parks also highlighted her ongoing commitment to mentorship through her free weekly Zoom series Watch Me Work, hosted via The Public Theater.

Innovation was another key theme of the evening, embodied by Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder of Runway. Discussing the origins of the platform, Valenzuela explained, “We started almost eight years ago inside NYU Tisch, thinking about how we could use AI to augment human imagination and creativity.” While the name may evoke fashion, Runway’s impact spans film, media, and design. “It’s a general-purpose creative tool powered by AI,” he said, noting how it enables artists to iterate faster and rethink their creative process. “It’s changing how people approach their ideas and how they interact with technology every day.”

Behind the scenes, the gala itself is a carefully orchestrated celebration of the Tisch community. Dean Rubén Polendo offered insight into the selection process: “It’s really a conversation across the school, looking at our community. We’re celebrating both alumni and current faculty, reaffirming that what we do here shapes the future.” He also credited the efforts of the external affairs team, including Senior Associate Drew Uriarte, in bringing the event to life.

The spotlight at the 2026 Gala hosted by the New York University Tisch School of the Arts wasn’t just on its distinguished honorees, it was firmly on the electrifying performances that brought the evening to life. The milestone celebration of Tisch’s 60th anniversary transformed into a dynamic showcase of the next generation of artistic talent.

Throughout the night, current Tisch students took center stage with a series of captivating performances that honored the legacy and future of the institution. From powerful vocal showcases to boundary-pushing multidisciplinary acts, each moment reflected the school’s commitment to nurturing bold, innovative voices. A standout highlight came from NYU’s premier a cappella group, the N’Harmonics, whose rich harmonies and contemporary arrangements energized the room and earned resounding applause from an audience of industry leaders and alumni.

Ultimately, raising nearly $2 million to support the critical needs of talented Tisch students the Tisch Gala served as a powerful reminder that creativity thrives at the intersection of tradition and innovation where established voices like Parks meet boundary-pushing technologists like Valenzuela, all within a community dedicated to shaping the future of the arts.
