Hosted by renowned journalist Lesley Stahl, the elegant black-tie affair celebrated four decades of Literacy Partners’ commitment to empowering families through education. Founded in 1986 by the late journalist and author Liz Smith, the annual gala continues to champion the organization’s mission of advancing literacy two generations at a time.
The evening highlighted the transformative impact of Literacy Partners’ programs, which help adults, parents, and caregivers develop essential reading and language skills while creating stronger educational foundations for their children. One of the most inspiring moments of the night came when a Literacy Partners student shared her personal journey. After learning English through the organization’s programs, she is now helping fellow students improve their literacy skills while pursuing a career in healthcare. Her success story also reflects the positive impact literacy has had on her children, who are now thriving academically.

The gala honored four remarkable individuals whose careers embody the values of education, leadership, storytelling, and service. Best-selling crime novelist Patricia Cornwell received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her groundbreaking contributions to contemporary fiction. Sabastian Niles, President and Chief Legal Officer of Salesforce, was presented with the Distinguished Leadership in Literacy Award for his commitment to expanding access and opportunity.
Publishing icon Barbara Tober received the prestigious Lizzie Award, recognizing her decades of dedication to culture, philanthropy, and civic engagement. Meanwhile, Sherrie Westin was honored with the Champion of Literacy Award for her leadership at Sesame Workshop and her commitment to early childhood education through the beloved children’s program Sesame Street.
Speaking about the significance of the event, Literacy Partners CEO Asaf Bar-Tura emphasized the importance of literacy as a pathway to opportunity.
“This gathering, which celebrated remarkable literacy champions, demonstrated that when we come together, a better future is possible,” said Bar-Tura. “Literacy is a gateway to social mobility and economic opportunity. The Literacy Partners community will continue to insist on a nation where everyone has the opportunity to read, work, engage, and thrive.”
Notable attendees included Jean Shafiroff, Sheila Nevins, Perri Peltz, David Westin, Courtney E.K. Lewis, and Bill Buford, all joining together to support the transformative power of literacy.
