Golden Globes 2021 Edition

It’s an unusual awards season and it’s kicking off with a bi-coastal Golden Globes. Hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the 78th Golden Globes were a scaled down socially distanced affair, typical of what we’ve seen over the past year. Despite the added precautions, the show felt relatively normal, aside from all the celebrities pictured as if they were on a mass Zoom call of course. Here are the highlights from the ceremony.

Fashion

Although most of the stars spent the ceremony in the comfort of their own homes, they still went all out with their looks.

One standout was Elle Fanning in Gucci. Fanning wore an icy blue silk gown with jeweled embellishments on the straps and back. The look was simple yet elegant, with these amazing photos showing off the subtle details.

A few other gorgeous gowns from the night were from Amanda Seyfried, Kaley Cuoco, and Angela Bassett. Seyfried and Cuoco both had a fairy tale feel in Oscar de la Renta. Cuoco truly looked like Cinderella in a silver ballgown with crystal embellishments, while Seyfried stunned in a salmon gown with floral embellishments encircling the top of the dress. Angela Bassett also impressed in a deep purple gown from Dolce & Gabbana with feather accents.

The Valentino looks really stole the show tonight, with Dan Levy, Leslie Odom Jr., and Cythia Erivo all wearing SS21 Couture. The men both swapped a typical black suit for colored numbers. Levy looked great in a chartreuse suit with a sparkly undershirt and shiny silver platforms to tie it all together. Odom Jr. was slightly more subdued in a dusty coral jacket with matching pants, but he did add a pop of color in a bright green turtleneck. Cynthia Erivo had arguably the most unforgettable look of the night in a structured fluorescent green gown. The silhouette of this dress is incredible, paired with sky-high platform heels and white gloves, Erivo looked magical.

Awards

This year’s awards ceremony felt refreshing. So many newer faces won their first major awards for knockout performances, a welcome change from an industry that usually prioritizes longevity.

The night started out strong with Daniel Kaluuya wining Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah, one of his biggest wins following numerous nominations for his performances over the years. His win was followed by John Boyega getting his first major win for Best Supporting Actor Television. Another first of the night came with Kemp Powers’ win for Soul as he became the first debut black filmmaker to win for an animated feature.

The Crown also won big, taking home the award for Best Television Series Drama. Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor also snagged the awards for their performances as leads in the drama, both enjoying their first Golden Globe.

Anya Taylor Joy also won her first globe for her performance in The Queen’s Gambit. Another actress coming away with her first major win was Andra Day, winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her role in The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland won big, with the director being the second woman ever to win Best Director. The team also took home the award for Best Motion Picture Drama, making this one to watch when Oscar nominations release.

The most touching moment of the night came when Chadwick Boseman won for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture. His wife accepted the award on the late actor’s behalf, giving a moving speech honoring the kind of speech Chadwick would have made had he been there.
