Year 2020 has been an adjustment for awards shows, but they seem to have gotten it down. People’s Choice 2020 was the latest to take part in the virtual and/or socially distanced fun and truly had something for everyone. The People’s Choice Awards have a huge lineup of categories and awards, and their main selling point is that it’s all about the people. All the shows and movies we’ve watched over the past year, the artists we’ve listened to, and the social media stars we can’t get enough of rolled into one all encompassing awards show.
Whether TV, movies, or music, is more of your thing, there were plenty of stars from all corners of Hollywood to entertain at this year’s show. Here are some of the highlights from one of pop culture’s biggest nights.
The People’s Choice Awards are all encompassing, and that meant a pretty sizable red carpet for the coronavirus era. Dozens of stars walked the carpet, showing off some seriously chic looks.
Demi Lovato hosted the show and had a number of outfits throughout the night. Our personal favorites are her red carpet look, a shimmering orange matching set from Naeem Kham with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and her opening monologue look, a nude Ellie Saab gown with silver stripes and stars.
Mandy Moore, winner of the award for drama TV star, kept it simple yet chic in a black mock neck dress from Brandon Maxwell, adding a pop of color in the form of statement blue Emmanuel Tarpin earrings. Tiffany Haddish impressed in a multicolor printed dress from Prabal Gurung, tied together with dainty earrings and a strappy heel. Comedy star Leslie Jones made a statement in a black Christian Siriano suit printed with the names of victims of police brutality.
The fashion highlight of the night was for sure Tracee Ellis Ross, recipient of this year’s Fashion Icon Award. She walked the red carpet in a sleek brown suit from Schiaparelli, and accepted her icon award in Alexander McQueen. In perhaps the best speech of the night, she spoke about how fashion can coincide with activism, saying, “If fashion is the thing that draws you in then use it as a tool for transformation….let your clothes be your superhero cape.”
With so many categories to cover, it was impossible to fit all the award recipients into the show’s two hour runtime. What viewers got was a good mix of everything, young and old stars coming together to thank the people that made their success possible.
Jennifer Lopez received one of the night’s biggest awards in the form of the People’s Icon Award. During her acceptance speech she was surprised with video messages from Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, and even her children. They commended her for her passion and tireless work ethic, doing it all from acting, to performing at the Super Bowl. “You are a triple-threat creative visionary,” said Zellweger, “you are an inspiration and you are certainly an icon.”
Tyler Perry was also honored with this year’s People’s Champion Award. Over the past year, he has restarted production and created jobs at his studio, and personally supports charities and families in need. He continuously inspires hope in people and uses his platform to help people. In a year like this, that is so needed and appreciated.
In the TV realm, Ellen Pompeo took home the award for Female TV Star for her role in Grey’s Anatomy. Not only was her outfit incredible – a mesh and bedazzled button up shirt with matching baggy pants – but her speech was lovely, calling for people to look out for each other and show love.
The final award of the night was a present surprise with People’s Choice Comedy TV Show going to Netflix dramedy Never Have I Ever. Creator Mindy Kailing and star of the show Maitreyi Ramakrishnan accepted the award and their speech felt like an appropriate ending to the night. “There’s so much more progress to be made,” they said, “and there are many powerful stories as yet untold.” Going forward from such a crazy year it’s important to not lose sight of continuing to uplift the unheard and underrated voices, whether that’s in film, TV, or music. It’s clear that’s what the people want.
