Godzilla might soon be looking for a new job after the sneak peak of what’s to come from season 12 of WEtv’s popular (and aptly named) reality show Bridezillas. The series follows women who were perfectly normal (for the most part) before wedding planning took over their lives. The preview, hosted at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, was accompanied with a student bridal dress design competition. Nine students from the Fashion Institute of Technology NYC and the Parsons School Of Fashion were given the opportunity to unleash their inner bridezilla to win the grand prize of $5,000.
Wearing an all-black ensemble like a true New Yorker, Michelle Collins hosted the event, joking to be channeling her inner Wednesday Addams in support of the wedding spirit. Don’t worry Michelle, we’re single, too. She was absolutely hilarious, and there were moments when the audience forgot that she was not the actual show. The star-studded panel of judges included Real Housewives of New York favorite Sonja Morgan, DailyMailTV host Jesse Palmer, the Bachelorette star Rachel Lindsay, model Carol Alt and former RHONY star Kelly Bensimon.
Who better to judge a competition inspired by brides being divas than our favorite diva herself, Sonja Morgan. An alumni of FIT herself, I had a chance to speak with Sonja before the models hit the runway.”Well, I am not going to favor the FIT students,” she joked. “I have many friends who are alumni from Parsons!” The reality-star-turned-designer looked radiant in a sparkly striped dress with plunging neckline from her own Sonja Morgan NY collection, proving, once again, she really is her own best advertisement. “If you watch the Real Housewives of New York, you know in 2015 I opened Fashion Week New York with my couture collection.”
When asked to describe her dream wedding dress, Sonja admits she was never a bridezilla herself.”Well, I was not a bridezilla. I was never one to say I wanna get married! I met my husband and fell in love with him, so we got married and had a baby. But the thing is, I would say these bridezillas are not unlike the housewives, where they have tantrums and it’s all about me, me, me! So, you’re going to see some creative designs that bring out that egocentric attitude.”
Though the judges admitted that it was a difficult decision, the prize ultimately went to Parson’s Beck Jones. He took on a more literal interpretation of Bridezillas, with his model sporting arrow wounds and a painting smashed through her head. That’s our Monday morning mood.
Also in attendance were Carson Kressley (“Queer Eye”), Cynthia Bailey Reality TV Personality), Lil Mama (WE tv’s “Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta”), Angelina Pivarnick (MTV’s “Jersey Shore”); Lauryn “Pumpkin”Shannon and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson (WE tv’s “Mama June: From Not to Hot”), as well as Marc Juris, WE tv’s President & GM and Lauren Gellert, WE tv’s EVP of Development & Original Programming.
